2023 Gartner Market Guide for Email Security

The 2023 Gartner Market Guide for Email Security

The Gartner Market Guide for Email Security[1] is a comprehensive report that provides insights into the current state of email security solutions, their effectiveness, and the latest trends in the market. The report is an essential resource for organizations seeking to improve their email security posture and protect their sensitive data from cyber threats. In this article, we will discuss the key takeaways from the 2023 Gartner Market Guide for Email Security.

Overview of the Email Security Market

The email security market has undergone significant changes in recent years, with the rise of cloud-based email services, increasing adoption of mobile devices, and the growing sophistication of cyber threats. The Gartner Market Guide for Email Security identifies four major categories of email security solutions:

1. Secure Email Gateway (SEG): SEG solutions are designed to block spam, phishing, and malware from entering an organization’s email system. These solutions use various techniques such as email filtering, URL scanning, and sandboxing to detect and block malicious emails.
2. Email Authentication: Email authentication solutions use techniques such as Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance (DMARC), Sender Policy Framework (SPF), and DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) to verify the authenticity of email messages and prevent domain spoofing and impersonation.
3. Email Encryption: Email encryption solutions use encryption techniques to secure the content of emails and protect them from unauthorized access.
4. Advanced Threat Protection (ATP): ATP solutions are designed to detect and block advanced threats such as spear-phishing, Business Email Compromise (BEC), and ransomware. These solutions use techniques such as machine learning, behavioral analysis, and sandboxing to identify and block malicious emails.

Key Trends in the Email Security Market

The Gartner Market Guide for Email Security identifies several key trends in the email security market, including:

1. Increased Adoption of Cloud-based Email Services: Many organizations are moving their email systems to cloud-based services such as Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace. This shift has led to a greater need for cloud-native email security solutions that can provide protection for these environments.
2. Growing Importance of Email Authentication: As email-based attacks continue to evolve, email authentication has become an essential component of email security. Organizations are adopting DMARC, SPF, and DKIM to prevent domain spoofing and protect against phishing attacks.
3. Integration with Security Orchestration, Automation and Response (SOAR): Email security solutions are increasingly being integrated with SOAR platforms to enable automated response to email-based threats. This integration allows security teams to quickly and efficiently respond to threats and reduce the time to detect and remediate incidents.
4. Emphasis on User Education and Awareness: Many email-based attacks rely on social engineering tactics to trick users into clicking on malicious links or downloading malware. To mitigate this risk, organizations are focusing on user education and awareness to help users recognize and report suspicious emails.

Key Recommendations for Organizations

The Gartner Market Guide for Email Security provides several recommendations for organizations seeking to improve their email security posture, including:

1. Adopt a Comprehensive Email Security Strategy: Organizations should adopt a comprehensive email security strategy that includes a combination of SEG, email authentication, email encryption, and ATP solutions.
2. Prioritize Cloud-native Email Security Solutions: As more organizations move their email systems to the cloud, it is essential to prioritize cloud-native email security solutions that can provide protection for these environments.
3. Implement Email Authentication: Email authentication is an essential component of email security, and organizations should implement DMARC, SPF, and DKIM to prevent domain spoofing and protect against phishing attacks.
4. Integrate with SOAR Platforms: Integration with SOAR platforms can enable automated response to email-based threats and reduce the time to detect and remediate incidents.
5. Focus on User Education and Awareness: User education and awareness can help mitigate the risk of social

Why GTB’s DLP that Works^tm is crucial to any email security strategy

Data Loss Prevention (DLP) is a critical component of any comprehensive email security strategy. DLP solutions are designed to prevent sensitive data from leaving an organization’s network, and they play a crucial role in protecting against data breaches and compliance violations. In this article, we will discuss why DLP is crucial to email security strategy and the benefits of implementing DLP solutions.

Preventing Data Loss

Email is one of the most common channels for transmitting sensitive data, including personally identifiable information (PII), financial information, and intellectual property. DLP solutions can help prevent this data from leaving an organization’s network by identifying and blocking emails that contain sensitive data.

DLP solutions use a variety of techniques to identify sensitive data, including content scanning, pattern matching, and machine learning. When sensitive data is identified, DLP solutions can take a range of actions, including blocking the email, encrypting the email, or notifying the sender or recipient of the potential data breach.

Protecting Against Data Breaches

Data breaches can be costly and damaging to an organization’s reputation. DLP solutions can help prevent data breaches by identifying and blocking emails that contain sensitive data before they are transmitted outside of the organization’s network.

In addition to preventing data breaches, DLP solutions can help organizations comply with data protection regulations such as GDPR, CCPA, and HIPAA. These regulations require organizations to take steps to protect sensitive data, and DLP solutions can help support that organizations are meeting these requirements.

Increasing Visibility and Control

DLP solutions provide organizations with greater visibility and control over their email systems. DLP solutions can identify and monitor emails that contain sensitive data, providing organizations with insight into how their sensitive data is being transmitted and who is accessing it.

DLP solutions can also provide organizations with greater control over their email systems. Organizations can configure DLP policies to block or encrypt emails that contain sensitive data, and they can monitor email activity to promote that employees are following security policies.

In Conclusion

DLP is a critical component of any comprehensive email security strategy. DLP solutions can help prevent data loss, protect against data breaches, and increase visibility and control over email systems. By implementing DLP solutions, organizations can protect their sensitive data, comply with data protection regulations, and reduce the risk of costly data breaches.
